(re)wind - TED Fellow, Fariel Salahuddin on the Economics of Abundance
creating abundance with what's right in front of you
Welcome to another week of THE IDEALISTS. (re)wind!
Alisa Kennedy Jones, head of Marketing at THE IDEALISTS., coming to you this week… It’s hard to believe we are actually at 64 episodes of the podcast. It’s a dream of a show to work on, and as we make our way toward 100 episodes, our team has been going through the archives, dusting off the episodes we love the most. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be bringing you our favorite conversations to celebrate how far we’ve come!
This week’s guest is the remarkable Fariel Salahuddin. Fariel is a world-renowned TED Fellow and Cartier Women’s Initiative finalist as well as the founder of the innovative company Goats for Water. Fariel’s work takes ancient monetary systems and applies cutting-edge technologies to create scalable economic and environmental solutions for developing nations around the world.
I chose this episode because during my own work volunteering for the UN Foundation, we saw firsthand how much time and raw physical energy women expend each day hauling water from distant wells—upwards of four hours. If they were able to leverage their most immediate forms of currency (animals) for solar water and electrical systems—it would free up so much time for thinking, learning, reading—and ultimately so much more personal agency. What I loved most about Fariel’s way of thinking is that sometimes, the most inclusive solutions are the simplest—and right in front of us.
I loved this conversation when I first heard it last year and, in truth, I love it even more today as we consider how women continue to fight for autonomy and tackle ongoing climate change.
You can listen to the episode here.
With gratitude,
Alisa
